.:Political Comics:.

Posted in Canada on May 8, 2012 by Oli♥ia

Behind every comic or picture there is an underlying message. The comics shown below each have their own underlying message concerning politics.

The underlying message portrayed in this comic shows that the artist is in favour of Confederation. In this comic confederation is shown in the form of a baby. Even though John A. McDonald is the Father of Confederation, others thought it was such a good idea they wanted to take credit for Sir John’s idea. This is what they photo is showing, all the men are trying to claim they are the father of the child (confederation) when in reality our father of confederation is Sir John A. McDonald.

.:Solve a Problem, Eliminate World Poverty:.

Posted in School with tags on April 11, 2012 by Oli♥ia

Poverty is a world issue, it affects people  around the globe. Many people turn a blind eye and have no idea that poverty is also existent in developing countries.

Each day poverty claims the lives of large sums of people; children and adults. Statistics show that the amount of world wide child deaths each day are linked to extreme poverty.

Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling is co-founder of the organzation Lumos (also known as the Children’s High Level Group) Lumos is an organization that helps children with disabilities that  are institutionalized beacause of poverty, disability and ethnicity.

Poverty can be helped by donating money and volunteering. Did you know that for every dollar can provide 40 people with meals? Poverty has been around long before we can remember, long before our generation. Now it is time for our generation to take a stand and help decrease world poverty!

Movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Director: David Yates

Writers: Steve Kloves (screenplay), J.K. Rowling (novel)

Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint

The  final installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2) follows Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione on their journey to discover and destroy Lord Voldemeort’s remaining Horcruxes. This movie was released July 15 2011 in theaters and came out on DVD November 11 2011.

The target audience for this movie would be 13+. The movie’s rating is PG 13, due to intense action and some violent subject matter. I also think that the target audience is anyone who has read the Harry Potter series or watched the movies preceding the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

The movie has appealed well to audiences around the world. And accumulated a total of 43.5 million dollars at midnight and early morning ticket sales opening day (in North America.) This movie was a great way to end everybody’s favourite book series.

.:Exercise Substitutes vs. Eating Less and Exercising More:.

Posted in School with tags on January 27, 2012 by Oli♥ia
Imagine… a way to lose weight without the need to exercise, a workout substitution. An excuse to eat whatever you want, when you want. And then a solution to all that weight you should have gained. Do you really believe all those commercials like the ones promising happiness and weight loss without the any amount of physical activity? These commercials are influencing the next generation of young adults and they are altering the level of physical activity adolescents are preforming day to day. Is this the way we are going to develop a healthier future?Think about the components of each and every weight loss commercial. They always show the perfect life that comes out of the program. It explains the product’s components: no exercise, meal plan, and payment. It then proceeds to show how lives have been affected in a positive way. But how much of this is real? That perfect girl you see in the commercial…she’s an actress and is paid to appear in the advertisement. That meal plan is full of food that has been tampered   and altered. And have you ever read the fine print? There are always consequences whether it is illness, the fact that you must exercise five times a week while on the supplement or the instant weight gain once you are off the product. There is only one way to lose weight and that is “eat healthier and exercise more.”

Another thing to consider is “false promises.” If you are on a product that guarantees weight loss in at least a week and nothing is happening you may begin to have a negative attitude and a lower self-esteem. You will begin to think of yourself as a failure, and will lose all motivation towards the goal of weight loss and a healthy life. All commercials are the same; they show actors exhibiting the product. But it is not showing real life cases. How do we know the product really works.

Although commercials may show false promises, some are encouraging. They give people the boost they need to get up off the couch and get active. But there are always those commercials with the fine print, perfect actors and false promises.

It is common knowledge that in order to live a healthy life you must eat right and exercise often. Teens and adults must not rely on products in order to live their life to its fullest potential. If you are expecting to lose weight without exercise in the picture, you are sadly mistaken. It takes a variety on components: a positive attitude, healthy food choices, and exercise! If commercials are advertising a product and exercise is not involved, it is giving adolescents the wrong idea about living a healthy life.

Media will always have an effect on adolescents everywhere, for example, magazines, television and the internet. But you have to have the power to know what’s right. Remember the only way to lose weight is to “eat less and exercise more.” Follow that, and we will be creating a healthier generation.

.:HP Quotes:.

Posted in Harry Potter with tags , on January 19, 2012 by Oli♥ia
  • “Proud?” said Harry. “Are you crazy? All those times I could’ve died, and I didn’t manage it? They’ll be furious….”
  •  ”Hey, look – Harry’s got a Weasley sweater, too!” Fred and George were wearing blue sweaters, one with a large yellow ‘F’ on it, the other a ‘G.’ “Harry’s is better than ours, though,” said Fred, holding up Harry’s sweater. “She obviously makes more of an effort if you’re not family.” “Why aren’t you wearing yours, Ron?” George demanded. “Come on, get it on, they’re lovely and warm.” “I hate maroon,” Ron moaned half-heartedly as he pulled it over his head. “You haven’t got a letter on yours,” George observed. “I suppose she thinks you don’t forget your name. But we’re not stupid – we know we’re called Gred and Forge.
  • “I believe your friends Misters Fred and George Weasley were responsible for trying to send you a toilet seat. No doubt they thought it would amuse you.”
  •  ”To the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.”
  •  ”Longbottom, if brains were gold, you’d be poorer than Weasley, and that’s saying something.”
  •  ”Ah, of course. There is no need to tell me any more, Ms. Granger. Which one of you will be dying this year?”
  • “I’ve been able to see them ever since my first year here. They’ve always pulled the carriages. Don’t worry. You’re just as sane as I am.”
  • Reading between the lines, I’d say she thinks you’re a bit conceited, mate.”
  • “What’s up with you, Hermione?” She was gazing out the window, but not as though she really saw it. Her eyes were unfocused and there was a frown on her face. “Just thinking…” she said, still frowning. “About Siri — Snuffles?” said Harry. “No…not exactly…” said Hermione slowly. “More…wondering…I suppose we’re doing the right thing…I think….aren’t we?” Harry and Ron looked at each other. “Well, that clears that up,” said Ron. “It would have been really annoying if you hadn’t explained yourself properly.”

.:An Eighth Book?:.

Posted in Harry Potter, Miscellaneous, School with tags on January 19, 2012 by Oli♥ia

Joanne Kathleen Rowling’s series, Harry Potter, provides hours of pleasure reading, magical adventures, and he background story is one that inspires us to follow our dreams. But sadly, the adventures of Harry Potter came to an end when she released the seventh and final book “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” The series truly came to an end when the eight movie was released in 2011 when both Deathly Hallows films (part 1 and 2) were released. But the series left us wondering “What happened to all the characters? What did they do with their lives?”  Movies have been made, spin-off books have been written and websites made, but J.K Rowling leaves us wanting more!

At the end of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Joanne mentions that Nineteen Years Later, Ron and Hermione get married and Ginny and Harry get married. It then proceeds to indicate that they are at Kings Cross Station sending their kids off to Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. People wonder what an eighth book could possibly be about. Everything has been covered. I believe that some possible ideas for an eight book could include; the characters career paths, Harry and his friends telling their kids about their adventures, the life of their kids at Hogwarts, or possibly the years before the “Nineteen Years Later.” Whatever the basis, I predict that it could possibly one of the best books in the series. Why? Because; nobody can get enough of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

It is understandable that Joanne Rowling may be ready to take a break from the series, possibly needing a break, or that financially she is set for life. But her books get motivate children to read. They are captivated by her story lines and the characters adventures, and this is promoting children to become avid readers. As for her financial stability, perhaps she could have a percentage of the books gross income donated towards a charity. It is common knowledge that she supports a variety of charities and has done the donation of a percentage of funds with her spin-off books.

On a positive note it is said that she is not ruling out an eighth book and that she may come back to the World of Harry Potter in a decade or two. It is confirmed that there will be a Harry Potter encyclopedia. But when asked when the release date could possibly be, Joanne stated that it wasn’t going that well and that she hadn’t started writing it yet. We can look forward to the encyclopedia in the next five years though. Its is understandable that after ten years of writing a series that she may n eed a break but her writing benefits kids everywhere. They read more, become entranced with her story and they can’t get enough.

While Joanne states “I have no plans to write another novel. I’m pretty sure I’m done on the novel front … But it was fun while it lasted.” We can only hope that in due time she will change her mind. Because we have not had enough of the Magical Wizarding World of Harry Potter

.:Surviving 2011: In 48 Seconds:.

Posted in Miscellaneous, School with tags , , on December 20, 2011 by Oli♥ia

The Year of 2011 has been eventfull; full of events good and bad. The Royal Wedding, the death of Steve Jobs, the Japan Tsunami, and the “Rapture that Didn’t Happen.” Many bad things happened, but we made it through together.

Events Shown in Movie

-Japan Tsunami
-Death of Osama bin Laden
-Libya War
-The Rapture that didn’t Happen
-Riots in Greece

.:One Event that is Truly Important:.

Events, such as the Japan Tsunami, brought us closer together. Countries really came through to help Japan. We raised money and donated goods. Think about it. We were helping people on the other side of the world, this event got us interacting with many other people of religions, races and origins. Yes, it was a life changing/tragic event, but it really got the world’s attention, and brought us together as a whole to help the people who suffered from this event. I feel that this is truly an important event that happened in the year of 2011.
